Clarion Call

22/10/18
Clarion Call

Featuring the voices of Beth Gibbons, Elizabeth Fraser, Elaine Mitchener, Melanie Pappenheim, Cherise Phillips and guidance from Shirley Collins.

Over the 11 days of SPILL Festival, this large-scale outdoor sonic artwork will ring out from the Ipswich waterfront into the town’s public spaces at dusk for eleven minutes each day.

The voices of women and girls call to the setting sun in daily incantations, broadcast with audio technology employed for emergency and control, repurposed as a mechanism for public ritual.

Devised by Melbourne based artists Byron J. Scullin, Hannah Fox and Thomas Supple, Clarion Call stands as an ephemeral monument to the aftermath of wars past, present and future.

Clarion Call was co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW and Pacitti Company for the SPILL Festival of Performance and developed with the support of Dark Mofo

War Child and music go way back

War Child and music go way back

To 1995 and the Balkans bloodbath happening on our doorstep. Whilst politicians did nothing, musicians like Oasis, Radiohead, Sir Paul McCartney and Paul Weller came together and did something remarkable.
They recorded the 'HELP' album in just three days. It's the charity record that all others are compared to.
Since then, War Child has enjoyed a special relationship with some of the most legendary artists and hottest new acts.
There albums and gigs have raised money and awareness for War Child's vital work. They've pioneered using the power of the music itself as a tool for therapy and for taking our message to a mass audience.

The upcoming DOOM/Jneiro Jarel collaboration-- under the name JJ DOOM-- will apparently feature Damon Albarn and Portishead's Beth Gibbons on a track. "Just did a song with Beth of Portishead and Damon Albarn!", Jarel tweeted this weekend, as Consequence of Sound points out. The album, called Keys to the Kuffs, was originally scheduled for a May release through Lex Records, but that seems unlikely at this point.
